Don’s early years in the service aspect of the industry took him from Charlottesville-to-Richmond-to-Norfolk, Virginia. Advancing to the position of Operations Director for a family-owned business with offices in Lynchburg, Richmond, Roanoke and Norfolk, he was instrumental in growing their annual revenues from $3 Million to $16 Million in a 14-year period. Key to this phenomenal growth were the changes Don implemented to the company’s philosophy and culture. At the time he began, the only factor that determined Copier Technician Service Visits was meter count (a number preset at the factory for the size of a particular machine/model). Seeing the flaw in this system (there was no allowance for time elapsed, human interaction or environmental operating conditions), Don initiated an innovative 90-Day Preventive Maintenance Program for new and existing clients. Consequently, customers received four planned visits to inspect and maintain their equipment each year, regardless of the number of copies they made. This proactive-versus-reactive approach resulted in a highly-successful firm with motivated employees. It was Don’s service-over-sales philosophy that elevated customer satisfaction and loyalty levels to new heights.
That service-over-sales philosophy is the foundation for Cornerstone Business Solutions. Don purchased the Waynesboro area office of a regional copier company. That acquisition included the license to offer Canon products in the Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont Regions of Virginia. This market area includes Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, Lexington and Charlottesville in Virginia. Cornerstone Business Solutions was born and Don Herring’s vision became a reality.
